What is the life time of a comet ?

Every time a periodic comet circles the sun it loses its dust and ice at the rate of 2 million tonnes per day! It is estimated that it will take between 10-100 passages around the sun for all the gas and dust to be blown away, leaving behind only a chunk of rock that can no longer put on a brilliant display, that is characteristic of a comet.
